New Consumer Features to be introduced to HES Scheme
Posted: 10/06/2010
On June 8th, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) introduced two new features to the Home Energy Saving (HES) Scheme, designed to further empower consumers, first by guiding them on suitable upgrade works and secondly informing them of the impact of works undertaken.
The smart online Home Energy Self Survey is devised to help homeowners decide which upgrade works might be suitable for their homes. The new survey will be offered to all applicants at the start of the online application process.
At the same time a Building Energy Rating (BER) is to become an intergral part of all grant applications under the HES Scheme, whereby homeowners must undertake a BER to measure the impact of works undertaken. This will give homeowners a thorough and objective assessment of the energy performance of their home following upgrade works, including a BER certificate with a A-G performance rating.

10 Ways to Green Your Home
Posted: 31/05/2010
Below are ten steps you can take to go green, lower the amount of energy your home uses and reduce your carbon footprint.
1. Insulate your cavity walls and attic, this is one of the easiest ways to save money in your home, resulting in up to 40% savings on your home heating bills. Did you know there is a government grant available from SEAI for €650.00 towards your upgrading.
2. Make the switch from your old bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). You will get savings on your electricity bills per annum and over the lifetime of the bulbs. You will also Co2 emmissions.
3. Turn off your appliances instead of leaving them on standby.
4. Start rolling those Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle and in that order.
5. Use a fan assisted oven, they are 25% more efficient than conventional ones.
6. Get composting! Composting is an enitrely natural process and a great way of been green in your home.
7. Lower your thermostat. For every degree you turn down your thermostat you save 2% on your annual heating bill.
8. Wash your clothes at 30°C instead of 40°C. You’ll cut the energy used by almost half.
9. Switch to paperless billing, use e-statements and e-billing.
10. Use rechargeable batteries, or if you have disposable ones ensure to recycle them, most supermarkets have recycling boxes at till points.
Put a hat on your home!

The benefits of roof/ attic insulation.
You put a hat on your head and keep your body heat in. Thermal insulation in your roof will do the same for your house. If you do not have insulation in your attic, up to 30% of your heat could escape costing you money.
A building which is not insulated is an enormous drain on heat and the heating bills paid on it are essentially moeny down the drain..
Even if your attic is already insulated you could consider replacing it or adding too it, to bring it up to the Building Regulations.
